About This Item

"Men and Women" by Robert Browning. 1855 1st UK edition; Chapman and Hall; London. Complete in 2 volumes. Uncommon in original publisher's green cloth; gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Though not received well with poor sales when first published, this collection of 51 poems is now generally considered to contain some of Browning's best work.

Condition:
Some sun fading along the cover edges, as well as down the center of the back cover of volume I. The tops of the spine have some cloth pieces missing. Volume I: tight binding with no loose pages; partial crack at the front hinge between the end paper and pastedown; modern inscription written in blue marker on the front end paper (dated 1986). Volume II: the front cover is barely attached and loose and has nearly separated from the spine; separation of the text block at the center of the book; crack at the rear hinge between the end paper and pastedown. The pages of both volumes are in good condition with some sparse, tiny foxing spots here and there; both volumes have a name written lightly in pencil at the top of the title page, as well as occasional light pencil notations and underlines.
