Octavo (22.5cm.); original green gilt-embossed cloth, all edges sprinkled, brown glazed endpapers; xiv,[11]-575pp.; steel engraved author portrait frontispiece, 17 plates. Some shelf wear, especially at corners, spine gilt a bit dulled; some plates foxed and dampstained, plate of Lincoln's portrait torn along top half of gutter edge slightly affecting image, else contents Very Good; later bookplate of a George Munson Curtis to front pastedown. Subjects include Ulysses S. Grant, Frederick Douglass, and Henry Ward Beecher. BAL 19449.
