Black and white photo reproductions throughout. [From Foreword] Memories of Burnley is a compilation of photographs from the not-too-distant past. Each has been chosen according to its ability to rekindle memories of days gone by, most of which being within the recollection of many readers. The book is not intended to be a work of local history, it has much more to do with entertainment than serious study, but if looking through these pages prompts further reading on the subject, then so much the better! We have been fortunate in Burnley in gaining access to some excellent photographs. Royal visits are well-covered, with accounts detailing the warmth of the welcome given by Burnley people described in detail. The town has undergone massive redevelopment over the years since the War, and lost some fine old buildings in the process; The Empire and Palace Theatres, the old Market Hall, The Savoy Cinema and many others fall into this category. Several of these are featured in the book and are bound to create feelings of nostalgia in those who remember them. Looking back, it is easy to be selective with our memories and only remember the good things. On the whole we feel that the changes brought about in Burnley have been for the good: the segregation of cars and pedestrians, the clearance of central slum areas and the creation of open, relaxed shopping areas all represent major improvements. Whether the price paid for these changes was too high is for others to judge, but Burnley does seem to have emerged from her development in much better shape than many neighbouring towns. Compiling Memories of Burnley has been a pleasure. Whatever your age. we hope you enjoy reading it.Happy memories!
