Memorial Addresses in the Congress (…) and Tributes of Sir Winston Churchill.: The Antony Eden copy

A deluxe copy in a special cardboard binding, with gold gilt embossing on the front cover of the United States Congress, with a name sheet added at the head, addressed to Anthony Eden:

"For the Lord Avon from John F. Flynt Jr A Representative in the Congress of the United States of America 24 January 1966".

This precious copy is dedicated to Anthony Eden, Churchill's former Foreign Secretary during the war and British Prime Minister in 1951, following Winston Churchill.

The volume is a gift from Representative John J. Flynt Jr. of Georgia, a Democrat who served in the US House of Representatives from 1954 to 1979.

Winston Churchill died on 24 January 1965 at the age of 90: it was the first state funeral for a non-royal since Edward Carson and will remain the most recent state funeral in the UK until Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on 19 September. With President Johnson unwell, the United States sent Chief Justice Earl Warren, former President Dwight D. Eisenhowern, Secretary of State Dean Rusk to the funeral, which took place on 30 January.

Three days later, on 3 February 1965, a young Democratic elected official from Georgia, John Flynt, submitted a resolution to the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US Senate, to compile an internal document for publication as a tribute to Winston Churchill by the country and its elected officials; "these remarks would be" "printed and bound as directed by the Join Committee on Printing of 10 copies of such document for use by each Member of the House of Representatives and 15 copies for use by each Member of the Senate. This House document would become a tangible symbol of the gratitude of the American people for the life of Winston Churchill and the contributions which he made during his life of four score years and ten.

The resolution was passed by the Senate a month later, on 29 March 1965, and Flynt was appointed to oversee the publication. He wrote the preface and worked on the book for almost a year. The volume contains the Senate documents relating to the vote on 9 March 1963 to make Churchill an honorary citizen of the United States, crowning five years of efforts by American parliamentarians to award the great statesman this supreme tribute, which Churchill had initially refused in 1958: 'Already half American in blood,' he wrote, 'I think it better to leave it at that than to receive an official seal on the affection and great respect I have for your country. ". The volume then presents all the speeches and tributes given from the floor of Congress - upper and lower houses - by representatives from 25 January 1965 onwards, as well as those published in the press by representatives who were too far from Washington on that day.

In accordance with Flynt's wishes, a special print run was reserved for members of the Senate, amounting to 5,860 copies (10 to 15 copies per representative, depending on their chamber). Of these, a handful will be named with a dedication slip added and worded by John Flynt, for the attention of senior US and foreign officials.

This one is the copy addressed to Anthony Eden, the former British Prime Minister and Winston Churchill's most loyal companion since 1940.

A signed letter from Flynt to Anthony Eden accompanies the copy, dated 24 January 1966: 'Dear Lord Avon, As a member of the Congress of the United States of America, I have the honour to present to you this copy of the Memorial Speeches and Tributes which have been delivered in the United States Congress in memory of and in honour of Sir Winston Churchill. These testimonials speak for themselves and it is fitting that you should receive this tribute to the great man and the great citizen of the world on the first anniversary of his death in January 1965. In asking you to accept this token of respect and affection for Sir Winston from the American people, for whom the members of Congress are aware of your deep and intimate relationship with him. We are grateful for the bonds of friendship and sympathy which you have so marked for us and which have served us all so well. With the greatest respect, John J. Flynt, Jr.".

Conformément au souhait de Flynt, un tirage spécial est réservé à l'attention des membres du Sénat, à hauteur de 5860 exemplaires (pour 10 à 15 exemplaires par représentant, selon leur chambre). Parmi ceux-là, une poignée seront nominatifs avec un feuillet de dédicace ajouté et libellé par John Flynt, à l'attention des hautes personnalités américaines et étrangères.

Une lettre signée de Flynt à l'adresse d'Anthony Eden accompagne l'exemplaire, datée du 24 janvier 1966 : "Cher Lord Avon, En tant que membre du Congrès des États-Unis d'Amérique, j'ai l'honneur de vous présenter cet exemplaire des Discours et Hommages commémoratifs qui ont été prononcés au Congrès américain à la mémoire et en hommage de Sir Winston Churchill. Ces témoignages parlent d'eux-mêmes et il est approprié que vous receviez cet hommage au grand homme et au grand citoyen du monde, à l'occasion du premier anniversaire de sa mort en janvier 1965. En vous demandant d'accepter ce témoignage de respect et d'affection pour Sir Winston de la part du peuple américain, pour lequel les membres du Congrès sont conscients des relations profondes et intimes que vous entretenez avec lui. Nommé ministre des Affaires étrangères en 1951, lors du retour au pouvoir de Churchill, il lui succède au poste de Premier ministre le 12 avril 1955. Il est décoré de l'ordre de la Jarretière (KG) le 20 octobre 19547. En novembre 1956, partageant la même analyse que Guy Mollet sur la nationalisation par Nasser du canal de Suez, il engage le Royaume-Uni dans l'expédition militaire de Suez aux côtés de la France, mais doit mettre fin aux opérations sous la pression des Américains. Le 9 janvier 1957, il se retire de la vie politique officiellement pour raisons de santé. Il est remplacé par Harold Macmillan. Vingt ans plus tard, à l'hiver 1977 et alors qu'il est en visite chez Averell Harriman, ancien conseiller de Roosevelt pendant la guerre, il doit être rapatrié d'urgence en Angleterre ; il y meurt le 14 janvier 1977, dans son manoir d'Alvediston, dans le Wiltshire.
