About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1969. Hardcover. 219p., no illustrations whatsoever, 219p., first edition in 9x5.5 inch green papered boards gilt, and enclosed in the dust jacket. A near-fine copy in every respect, and (from skimming Enright's text), a darned amusing text. Certain scholarly venues, most especially in Egypt, took offence at his -what, levity? -and kicked him out of their country. The 'mendicant' of Enright's title derives from the problem of nowhere-to-go and out-of-pocket following some of these oustings. He taught cosmopolitan literature and was an anti-establishment poet.
