With a frontispiece and folding facsimile plate of handwriting to volume I. Publisher's catalogues to the front and rear of most volumes. John Gibson Lockhart was a Scottish writer and editor. He was Sir Walter Scott's friend and son in law, best known for this biography of Scott, which has been called the second most admirable biography in the English language after Boswell's Life of Johnson. Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. He was one of the most popular writers of the 19th century, and his works were read internationally in Europe, Australia and North America. In the original publisher's cloth. Externally, sound with heavy fading to the spines. Light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Kelly College library bookpalte to the front pastedown of each volume. Booksellers label to front pastedown of volume IV and VII. Rear hinge tender to volume I and II. Joints split to the head of volume I. Loss and rubbing to the spine labels.
