About This Item
London: Martin Secker, 1924. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket, bookplate to the front pastedown. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell and chemise box. D.H. Lawrence turned his introduction to Memoirs of the Foreign Legion into the essay the Memoir of Maurice Magnus, which recounts Lawrence's short, tangled relationship with this obscure writer. The essay touched off a literary controversy between Lawrence and Norman Douglas, who felt Lawrence's account was inaccurate and mean-spirited.
