The scarce first edition.ESTC citation number T147011.Illustrated with a frontispiece. Register runs as: A8, a2, B-S8, T6. Collated, complete.The naval memoirs of James II, then the Duke of York, from the years 1660 to 1673. James commanded the Royal Navy during the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch War, during which he captures forts off the African coast, which helped to facilitate English involvement in the slave trade.This memoir was compiled from James' original letters, as well as those by other authorities of the day. James II became King after the death of his older brother, Charles II, in 1685. His reign was short lived, however, as he was deposed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution.An important work, it is generally thought to be edited by Samuel Pepys.Bookplate of Richard Luckett to the front paste down. In a full calf binding, rebacked with new endpapers. Externally, boards are rubbed. Wear to the extremities, with evidence of former wear and loss prior to rebacking. Light discolouration to the boards. A small amount of loss to the tail of the extremity of the rear board. Bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned with some occasional spots. Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
