Description:
Dublin & London: Robert Marchbank, and Sold By J. Archer and the Other Booksellers [Four Others], 1802. Sir Richard Musgrave (1757-1818) was an Irish writer and politician. He had been the High Sheriff of County Wexford, and wrote this account froma pro-British point of view. Indeed, his book was "so steeped in anticatholic prejudice as to be almost worthless historically." That would be the judgement of Irish nationalism for over the next one hundred years and longer. This is a Near Fine copy of the Third Edition [stated]; This edition published in two volumes; here is Volume II only. Musgrave begins with an account of the battle of Vinegar Hill in June of 1798, which was disastrous for the United Irishmen, doomed the Rebellion, but provided many an heroic figure. Bound with marbled paper boards with tan calf spine and tips. The spine is highly decorated in gilt, with the titling within red labels.Clean text; viii, errata; 552 pages, followed by an unpaginated Index. Fold-out maps and… Read More
