Pictorial endpapers; illustrations and hand-written text printed in black on recto of every leaf (translations of the handwritten text printed in gray on opposing verso of each spread). Lower corners a bit rubbed, minute bump at top edge of rear cover (nearly imperceptible), else a fine copy without dust jacket as issued. Signed by the author/artist, Laurent de Brunhoff.
First and only edition, being one of 500 copies produced. As stated on the colophon at the rear of the book: "The book was written and illustrated by Laurent de Brunhoff between June 1989 and May 2005. It is being published by Phyllis Rose to celebrate Laurent's 80th birthday, Babar's 75th birthday, and the 15th anniversary of her marriage to Laurent." A series of vignettes and stories about Laurent de Brunhoff's life, detailing his father's creation of the Babar books and his childhood continuing throughout his later life. Done in the script-written style of all of the early Babar books, this charming memoir tells the story behind one of the world's most famous elephants and the life of the author/artist who furthered his legacy!
