Jean-Sylvain Bailly was a French astronomer, mathematician, freemason, and political leader of the early part of the French Revolution He presided over the Tennis Court Oath, served as the mayor of Paris from 1789 to 1791, and was ultimately guillotined during the Reign of Terror
Editor: Albin de Berville - Politician, man of letters and general attorney at the bar of Paris Deputy of the district of Pontoise Perpetual Secretary of the Philotechnical Society, Jean-Francois Barriere - Jean-Francois Barriere was a French historian He wrote about the French revolution, most notably an annotated biography of Madame Roland entitled "Memoirs de Madame Roland, avec une notice sur sa vie, des notes et des eclaircissemens historiques par MM Saint-Albin Berville et Jean-Francois Barriere, edited and published in 1827 by Honore de Balzac
Barriere served 18 years in the Prefecture of Paris, rising through the ranks to become division chief He was removed from office and forced to retire following the Revolution of 1848 In addition to the memoirs of Bailly the set contains the editor's notice, a biographical sketch of Bailly, endnotes that add "historical clarifications"
This complete set, "Memoirs of Bailly: Notice on his Life, Notes and Historical Clarifications" is bound in contemporary marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering and detailing on the spine There is some scuffing and chipping, primarily at the top of the spines, including a small piece missing at the spine top of vol 1 Bindings however, are quite sound Slight age toning and foxing of text, but overall text is quite clean, with no marks or damage
