About This Item

NY John F. Trow, Printer 1852. 1st ed. Cover nearly detached, some foxing, fair. 8vo. 526p. Brown embossed morocco. A.e.g. The titles of books often hide their content. Such is especially the case with many books important to the study of rhetoric and composition. The present boo k is a case in point. On March 8, 1851, Robert Troup Paine, a student at Harvard, committed suicide. His parents--his mother died before the project could be completed--set out to compile a volume containing the themes, theses, forensics, and letter s written by their son in the Primary School of the University of the City of New York, the Grammar School of Columbia College, and Harvard. We count at least 91 different compositions. This book, then, stands as a significant resource for the study of mid-nineteenth century composition. Since it was written as a memorial volume only for private distribution among the friends of the deceased, few copies can have been printed. . Fair. Hardcover. 1852.
