About This Item

New York: Charles L. Webster & Co, 1891. Later Printing. Cloth. Very good. From the library of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, an illustrated copy of the Memoir of John A. Dahlgren by Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren.. Octavo, xi, 660pp. Green cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Clean text block, a few loose signatures, but overall solid. Faint dampstain to bottom corner of text block, lightly bumped edges, a very good example. Complete with two illustrated plates and a fold-out map. Bookplate of Henry Cabot Lodge on front pastedown endpaper, engraved by Tiffany and Co. U.S. Navy officer John A. Dahlgren (1809-1870) founded the Navy's Ordnance Department, aiding in the creation of the Navy's own foundry to produce equipment. Dahlgren also made improvements to weapons, specifically a cast-iron muzzle-loading cannon that increased range and accuracy.
Senator Henry Lodge Cabot (1850-1924) and his Lodge Reservations were the primary factors in stopping the United States from joining the League of Nations. His concern with the maintenance of American sovereignty in international defense systems led to the establishment of veto power in the United Nations Security Council today.
