Appeal to the membership of the Union League of Philadelphia by one of its members opposing a unilateral move by a League committee to forbid the club to endorse political candidates. "Had the Committee of Sixty-two openly avowed the purpose of playing directly into the hands of the political opponents of the Republican party, then they could not have used more effectual means for accomplishing such an end." (pp4-5) The Union League was founded in 1862 during the Civil War to support President Abraham Lincoln and Republican government and to champion the Union cause.
