SALZBACHER, Joseph. Meine Reise Nach Nord-Amerika im Jahre 1842.... Vienna, 1845. Two parts bound in one volume. viii, [4], 479, [2]pp. plus large colored folding map. Late 19th-century three quarter cloth and marbled boards, spine gilt. A touch of foxing on titlepage, else a clean, lovely copy. Howes S-58. Clark III:233. Graff 3661. Buck 373. Salzbacher's main objective in travelling to the States in 1842 was to examine the state of the Catholic Church there. He started from New York and travelled through Baltimore, Richmond, Charleston, Pittsburgh, Louisville and St. Louis, and back to New York via Detroit and Buffalo. He comments on literary institutions he visited, and Catholic activities in the South. The large map shows the U.S. east of the Mississippi.
