No dust jacket, this is John Gardner's first book, preceding his The Resurrection by four years, it is essentially a text book written while he was an English professor at Chico State College, Signed by Gardner, it includes John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums, pages 248-258, text from The Long Valley, Goldstone & Payne B124, not recorded by Morrow, also includes Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and others. Very good plus.

Los Angeles, Grafton Publishing Company, 1912, first edition, first printing.. This slim hardcover, the Author's First Book, was issued without a dust jacket, Jeffers paid to have the book published in an edition of 500 copies, with the vast majority of those sold to a used book store, his authorial credit uses his full name (later shortened to just Robinson Jeffers). Very good minus with general soiling and age, Holmes Book Company of Los Angeles stamp to front free endpaper, the word "Apples" on the spine label is mostly obscured, the front cover label has tiny chipping around the edges, not affecting any of the text or the decoration.

Franklin Center, The Franklin Library, 1979, first edition.. Issued without jacket, full leather, de luxe binding, AEG, moire endpapers, ribbon marker, this unsigned limited edition precedes the Doubleday trade edition, it includes a special message from Stegner to subscribers as well as the separately-printed "Notes from the Editors" about Stegner and this book, Colberg A26.1.a, although not called for, this copy has been Signed by Stegner, very scarce thus. Fine.

NY, Macmillan, 1922, first edition, first printing, dust jacket. Hardcover.. One of 4,348 copies, frontispiece of a young Jack London as a sailor, the book is illustrated by G. M. Richards, interestingly, the jacket indicates that the book is aimed at ages 12-15, the book includes a preface by his widow, Charmian, dated in 1922, the date of publication, this group of stories includes Typhoon Off the Coast of Japan which she notes as the first London story ever written for publication, jacketed copies of London's first editions are scarce. Book fore edge soiled, else a very solid copy while the jacket has uniform soiling, small chipping at edges, and the front flap is oddly cut, as usual, not affecting text.

This is an extremely important study by a once-promising young native American scholar who, sadly, took his own life a few years ago, but who left the world of Steinbeck scholarship this landmark study and a number of other books, with this book Owens "examines how Steinbeck used this would-be Eden (California) to explore the moral bankruptcy of American society, to explore the corruption that lay beneath the beckoning surface of the American dream," this is a very scarce book that seldom comes on the market, this copy is an Association Copy of the highest order, being Inscribed to fellow Steinbeck scholar Robert DeMott, DeMott has been among the best of Steinbeck scholars for decades and is easily the most accessible writer who can explain and expound on Steinbeck in something other than English professor-speak, he was acting director of the Steinbeck Research Center at San Jose State University at the time of this… Read More

NY, Robert M. McBride, 1929, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover.. Author's First Book, first issue with top edge stained and with the final black leaf present, with the rare colorful pirate dust jacket illustrated by Mahlon Blaine, one of only 1,537 copies, published when Steinbeck was 27 years old and just two weeks before the 1929 stock market crash, a historical novel about the pirate Henry Morgan rendered in a purple prose manner quite unlike his realistic descriptive storytelling that followed, Goldstone & Payne A1a, Morrow 1. Very good book in a jacket with the usual spine color fade with chipping to top and bottom of spine, jacket with internal tape reinforcement.
