About This Item

London: The Bodley Head/Eyre & Spottiswode, 1965-1967. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. A short story collection and a novella by J. P. Donleavy, both first UK editions in excellent condition. The first UK editions of these two works in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Loosely inserted to The Saddest Summer of Samuel S is a slip from the publisher Eyre & Spottiswode, showing that this volume was sent to the previous owner as a review copy. With this slip is a typewritten review of both this novella, and the short story collection Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule, which were published jointly by Penguin and Eyre & Spottiswode. This copy of Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule, however, has been published by the Bodley Head.James Patrick Donleavy (1926-2017) was an American-Irish novelist, short story writer and playwright. He is best remembered for his novel The Ginger Man, which was initially banned for obscenity. The Saddest Summer of Samuel S is a novella, following the isolated and analytical protagonist through Vienna, as he falls prey to a shrewd American college girl.Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule is a collection of short stories and sketches, including Franz F, A Fairytale of New York, and Whither Wigwams. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition with gilt remaining bright to both volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrappers to both volumes are smart and bright, with just a little sunning to the spines. Fine
