About This Item

Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick and London, 1989. First Edition. Softcover. Good Condition. Illustrator: Photographic. acknowledgements, introduction – Authors, Audiences and Endings by Charles Wolfe, Frank Capra: A Biographical Sketch and selected bibliography. The text is illustrated with the occasional black-and-white film still. Photographic card cover with black coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. "The third film in a celebrated trilogy of socio-political dramas directed by Frank Capra in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Meet John Doe is arguably his most ambitious and disturbing work. Similar To Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Meet John Doe placed its hero at the center of a topical political crisis in America, in this instance the threat of a fascist coup by a media tycoon. But Meet John Joe complicated the motives of its hero and heroine, and the behaviour of it's erstwhile constituency – the "little people" – to such a degree that the comic triumph marking the ending of the earlier films was thrown into doubt. Produced independently by Capra and screenwriter Robert Riskin in the months prior to America's entry into World War II, Meet John Doe attracted widespread attention both within the film industry and without, and a search to a satisfactory ending to eat was a matter of much critical discussion and debate." – From the rear panel blurb. The full script is within the book along with reviews, commentaries and contexts. Creasing to the book corners and to the top. Backstrip edge. Rubbing to the book edges and book panels. Age toning of the textblock edges and of the internal text. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. (11), 4-297, (5) pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Photographic.
