History of the dramatic rise and fall of gold town Meadow Lake in eastern California. 1865 marked the report of gold, triggering such a feverish & frenzied stampede that within the year a city of several thousand sprang up. From the Meadow Lake Morning Sun, June 9, 1866: "One short year since first these mines were known/ Behold, like magic, lo! a town is shown/ Through the long storms of cruel, spotless snow/ A thousand hands have daily fought the foe/ The Old Man Mountain's beard, they've torn away ---/ His heart they''ll pierce & drag it to the day/ From his old veins a golden stream shall flow/ And Meadow Lake a mighty city grow." But a profitable way of removing gold from granite was not discovered. By 1868 the town was deserted. It is this story that Paul Fatout recounts in fascinating detail. Today, few traces of the town remain except for the cemetery ... hearts healed, veins intact, Old Man Mountain's beard grows again.

The story of Meadow Lake is like that of many camps that sprang up, flourished briefly and collapsed. A concise summary of general mining conditions and western camp life and then pinpoints activities in Meadow Lake.
