About This Item
Colt Press, 1941. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Very good copy. Reprint edition. Limited to 500 copies issued by Jane Grabhorn and William Matson Roth. Zamorano Eighty 58: "Many literary critics, including Henry L. Mencken, regard McTeague as the greatest of all American novels. While the story is a sordid one, involving the life and loves and mercenary instincts of an unlicensed San Francisco dentist, it contains some masterly descriptions of California's most glamorous city. The book is particularly significant because it marks the first appearance in the United States of realistic fiction of the genre produced by Emile Zola, Maupassant, Stendhal and other European writers." Johnson, High Spots of American Literature p. 60. Powell, California Classics pp. 175-184.
