Of imposing physical stature (six foot four) with flowing locks of pre-mature white hair, master of several Indian languages, practicing physician & merchant (his general store was the last stop of the Oregon Trail), and very strong in character, McLoughlin found himself in Oregon, occupying the land for England, as the Chief Factor of the Columbia Fur District of the Hudson's Bay Company (highly profitable under his leadership). He advocated an independent Oregon nation earning animosity from ever increasing American settlers. After Oregon was incorporated into the United States, McLoughlin was elected Mayor of Oregon City. A larger-than-life historical figure.
