About This Item
Thames & Hudson, London 1986. 4to, quality softcover very good. Illustrations selected bibliography, profusely illustrated with 107 black and white and 4 colour frontispiece. ISBN.0500 2742 23 . Max Ernst, regarded as one of the major influential figures of international surrealism,, used the word 'frottage' to describe a medium invented by him in 1925, which proved to be his most original contribution to automatism in art . It was created by placing paper over a textured surface, and then rubbing it to yield a print . The plates are mostly taken from two books illustrated by Ernst:; Histoire Naturelle and Ren Crevel's Mr Knife, Miss Fork , which inaugurated the artists collaboration with the Black Sun Press in Paris.
