About This Item
New York: Coward McCann, 1970. First American edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. First American edition (stated). Hardcover in black cloth stamped in gilt. 313 pp. Fine in very good dust jacket, bright, some wear at the extemities and a short closed tear bottom edge of spine strip. Gallico's warm, rollicking tale of a boxing kangaroo. When the world middleweight champion goes to a fair, he encounters Matilda, the aforementioned boxing kangaroo (who is, by the way, a male) that a theatrical agent sent to the showman who though he was getting a knife thrower. The human boxer is egged into a match with Matilda and gets knocked out in the second round. General hilarity and confusion ensues. The novel was adapted into the 1978 film of the same name starring Elliot Gould and Robert Mitchum (they used a human actor to play Matilda---seems like an opportunity missed).
