About This Item

Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie, 1885. First Edition . Cloth. Good Plus. 11 x 7 1/4. Benett, Leon. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie., 1885. First edition, with cartonnage type au ballon avec titre sur fond argent. All Edges Gilt. 111 illustrations and one map by Leon Benett; this copy also does have the letter to Alexandre Dumas, on the leaf following the title page. Text in French. 11" x 7 1/4", 552 pp. Spine shows notable fade (see scan); some wear at joints and front hinge; light foxing on occasional leaves throughout, most notable at title page (scan); two modest tape stains at endpapers, two earlier owner's names as well, one having been crossed out. Textblock in quite handsome and sturdy condition, with the above-mentioned occasional light spot of foxing. Overall, Good Plus, a tad short of about very good. Verne showed a bit of feel for socialistic theory in this adventure tale of a member of nobility whose innate values lead him to side with Magyar rebels in Hungary in a time of revolution. A scarce true first edition, preceding, of course, the English language firsts. Please see scans. LG6
