About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company,, 1941. First edition, first printing. Winner of the 1942 Newbery Medal, Walter D, Edmonds's "stirring story of young American courage" (jacket blurb) - as a a family defend their home during the French and Indian Wars - would have resonated with a country recently committing young men to war. Paul Lantz's illustrations are very striking. Square octavo. Original natural hessian cloth, spine and front cover lettered in brown, pictorial endpapers. With dust jacket. 6 double-page colour plates, monochrome illustrations throughout by Paul Lantz. A few nicks and chips to jacket, back panel lightly soiled. An excellent copy.
