About This Item
New York: American Lawn Tennis, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. A lovely example of the first trade edition of this classic, boldy inscribed by the author to an anonymous recipient: "With best wishes, sincerely, Wm T. Tilden 2nd. /January 27, 1934. This edition is actually more attractive than the limited leather edition, the spine of which always fades or becomes tatty. This edition is in deep blue full cloth, with gilt titles (and a spining gold tennis ball), with only a touch of edge wear (no rub-throughs or splits), and absolutely no fading. Also included is a 1936 notice of Bill Tilden's farwell exhibition match at Dreamland auditorium in San Francsico. Also laid in are copies of his obituary from 1953, and other clippings. The newspaper clippings have caused a minor band of acid offset on the back inside cover blank page. All pages are very clean, with some scattered pencil marks from the original owner and his thin neat ink POS on the title page (not on the same page as Tilden's fine inscription). A superb copy.
