Publisher's dark green moire binding with gilt-stamped spine titles and gilt-embossed publisher's emblem on front covers. White ribbon bookmarks. Title pages printed in red and black. Engraved title vignettes, headpieces, and initials. Printed at Chiswick Press. This is no. 622 of a limited editon of 1,000 copies printed for England and America. Many pages in vol. 2 unopened. Translation of Gargantua et Pantagruel. Bookseller's label on both back fixed endpapers for Chas. E. Lauriat Co., Boston. Gift inscription on vol. 1 front free endpaper: "J. Earl Quigley from S.B. Sadler 1913." Carlisle, Pa., resident Sylvester B. Sadler (1876-1931) served on the state supreme court from 1920 to 1931. J. Earl Quigley was a court stenographer in Carlisle who became deputy prothonotary of the state. In Very Good- Condition: covers are lightly soiled; edges rubbed; ends of spine slightly frayed; one vertical crease in each front board; a shadow on each half title page from clipping or other paper no longer present; otherwise, pages and plates are clean and bright. A very attractive edition with beautiful plates.
