An early issue of one of the most influential socialist magazines in history, a radical co-operative publication founded in Greenwich Village that published some of the most important authors and artists of the time, seeking to champion socialist ideology and co-operatives until it was ultimately shut down after a lengthy showdown with the government in which they stood trial accused of trying to "unlawfully and willfully…obstruct the recruiting and enlistment of the United States [military]". This issue, as the title implies, focuses on the plight of the farmer. Includes contributions by Eleanor Wentworth, Rufus W. Weeks, Frederick Sumner Boyd, Rufus James Trimble, Hank Jellis, Eugene Wood, Emanuel Julius, Pete Vlag, Andre Tridon, Carl Heileman, Donald Wand, Robert Hamburg, Jonas Atwater, and Fritz Von Brachstein. Other illustrators include Anton Otto Fischer (frontispiece), Maurice Becker, and Arthur Young. Quarto. 18pp, illustrated, frontispiece. Stapled wraps printed in brown ink on brown paper, featuring a portrait of a farmer by Robert Robinson on the front and a large print of "The Destroyer" by Charles A. Winter on the rear. Near fine with small closed tear at bottom of hinge.

Description:
12 mo. (7 x 4 1/2 inches) Glasgow, 1700. First Edition. (viii) 112 pages. Good condition: early nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, considerable wear to hinges (front hinge split, but holding), title in gilt on spine.

Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.
