About This Item

Boston: J.H. Eastburn's Press, 1858. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. 8pp. Original wrappers; old vertical crease. 9.5" x 5.75" This prospectus centers on the need for an ag school in Massachusetts in order to prepare young men for careers in farming, much as other colleges prepare them for other careers. "...It is proposed to solicit bequests and donations throughout the State, to obtain the means of purchasing suitable lands, and erecting the necessary buildings for a school or schools, where in addition to the usual branches of a sound but simple American education, the pupils shall be taught, in a practical manner, the best methods of husbandry adapted to the soil and climate...." The officers and trustees of the proposed school are listed, with Asa French as recording secretary. Some writers on the subject see this as the beginning of agricultural education in the US. [WorldCat locates only the NYPL copy of this pamphlet. The AAS has one as well.].
