About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish anti-Calvinist minister, a poet, and a pioneer in modern fantasy literature. His importance as an influence on Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and others, cannot be overstated. "MacDonald was acquainted with most of the literary luminaries of the day; a surviving group photograph shows him with Tennyson, Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Trollope, Ruskin, Lewes, and Thackeray. While in America he was a friend of Longfellow and Walt Whitman" (Wikipedia). This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, in an attractive Victorian decorative binding. Not common today. Brown cloth, rules in black, with a flower design on the front cover in green and gilt. Lettering on the spine and cover also gilt. Clean text; 467 pages. Laid-in is a newspaper clipping from 1924 regarding MacDonald. Mild bumping/wear at the margins; a bit dusty on top edge; still, a solid copy of an uncommon title these days. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

Synopsis

Mary Marston or A Daughter's Devotion (as it was later retitled in republication) is a novel by George MacDonald written in 1881 and originally entitled Mary Marston. Written at the height of George MacDonald's literary career, the story centers around the life of a simple merchant's daughter. Mary Marston's unswerving commitment to love God and others is contrasted with a backdrop of an array of characters and a complex and sometimes mysterious plot.
