About This Item

New York: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1909. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. New York: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1909.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING with all first issue points.

495 pages.
Illustrated throughout with photographs.

Very Good in Fair Dust Jacket. Rear hinge cracked else tight binding; clean pages and covers; contemporary inscription on a blank page - "Mr. Ravcoe[?] Hines / a gift from / Hon. Wm. E. Chandler / Dec. 12, 1911 / by the hand of his friend / SWC" - I'd like to think that the friend here was Willa Cather with the writer of the inscription mixing up her initials but who knows; moderate wear and bnumping to corners but still nice; dust jacket is quite worn with several chips; mostly backed with brown paper; some tears and soil.

Cather's fourth book.

David Stouck, in his introduction to the University of Nebraska Press edition, wrote that Cather's portrayal of Eddy "contains some of the finest portrait sketches and reflections on human nature that Willa Cather would ever write".

Stouck also wrote that "Willa Cather is indisputably the principal author of The Life of Mary Baker G. Eddy and the History of Christian Science."

An excellent association copy - William E. Chandler was a lawyer who became U.S. Senator from New Hampshire and Secretary of the Navy but most importantly he was chief counsel in the Next Friends lawsuit against Mary Baker Eddy in 1907, a headline court case at the time, and corresponded with Willa Cather regarding the subject during the case and Cather's time writing the book.

A great rarity as Christian Scientists urged the publisher to suppress the book and bought up many copies to destroy. There are even reports that a good number of copies were stolen from libraries. No copies in dust jacket appear in auction records and this is the first we've seen offered for sale.
