About This Item

Athens, Georgia and London: The University of Georgia Press, 1991. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 297 pages with Index. Correspondence between Twain and "surrogate granddaughters," twelve school girls ranging in ages ten to sixteen. From the publisher: "Account of Samuel Clemens' pastime collating the letters and telegrams he had exchanged with young girls whom he called "angelfish" and regarded as the purest members of humanity. Finding no impropriety in Clemens' relations with these girls, Cooley suggests his crime was in stereotyping them.".
