As referenced in BAL #3564, title page in black and red, terra-cotta imitation buckram binding with publisher's device stamped in blue on front. On copyright page: first edition; and, code letters K-P, signifying printed October, 1940. This is the 1940 first edition, selected by Bernard DeVoto from the unpublished parts of Twain's autobiography, copyrighted 1922; Editor and Twain scholar Bernard DeVoto took Twain's literary and opinionated anecdotes, asides, and discourses and shaped them into semi-autobiographical form for publication in 1940. Twain rambles along here discussing everything from Andrew Carnegie to Kipling. The result is an insider's look at the literary Mark Twain with insight as to why and how his humor became American folklore; 8vo .
