London/New York: Macmillan and Co., 1895. Walter Pater (1839-1894), literary and art critic, fisrt published this "philosophical" and historical novel in 1885; he revised it in 1892 for the third printing. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing, from the year of his death. Marbled paper-covered boards with green leather tips. The spine is brown leather, with five raised and ruled bands, gilt titling and decorations. Clean text; viii, 351 pages, top-edge gilt. Contemporary (1896) gift inscription on the second free endpaper. Rubbed around the margins, and with a chip to the foot of the spine; nonetheless, an attractive volume that presents very well.. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
