New York: Stallion Books / Universal Publishing and Distributing Corporation, 1954. Second Edition. Bragg's much-scandalized pseudonymously-written novel about a "fresh and fetching" seventeen year old girl who got "hooked" on marijuana at the hands of an older man out to seduce her. "But after that drug-induced ecstasy, Joyce's pretty feet trod the path of degeneracy. Here we study every nuance of her disturbing relations with other teen-agers, with mature men out for "kicks." We watch her resorting to every vile device, trading herself, body and soul for the drugs she had to have..." Originally issued as a digest-sized paperback in 1951, the novel served as Exhibit A in Congressman Ezekiel C. Gathings's House Select Committee on the proliferation of literature he considered a pox on American society, refering to the novel as "A Manual of Instruction for Potential Narcotic Addicts." All four edition of the novel are scarce; OCLC notes 2 holding for the Uni-Books edition (U.Illinois, Temple University). Gertz, p.6-8; Hubin, p.113. Reprinting Uni-Book #19 (1951). Digest-sized octavo (18.25cm); photo-illustrated wrappers; [4],5-127,[1]pp ads. Light wear and a few short tears to extremities, old, faint dampstain to upper edge of front and rear wrappers (noticeable chiefly on verso), with faint remnant of a grease pencil mark at upper left corner of front cover; contents clean; Very Good and sound.

Description:
New York & Toronto: Stallion Books, 1954. Second edition. 137, [1] pp. Bound in publisher's illustrated wraps. Very Good+ with slight roll and some foxing to spine, light wear, pages toned with age; much nicer shape than typically found. Uncommon in all editions.A very collectible novel of cannabis in the Beat era with an iconic cover image of a provocatively-clad blonde lady holding a joint like an antenna at half mast and sitting on the wooden floor, stoned out of her gourd. Very risque for the time, it would be the target of a Congressional Sub-Committee. The pseudonymous author's identity as been the subject of much debate. It ranks at the top of this bookseller's all-time pantheon of laughably implausible pen names, next to X. Sharks de Spot and Raccoona Sheldon.
