Rider Haggard, in the variant binding. The first UK edition of this work in the variant blue cloth binding with the colour plate illustrated by A. C. Michael adhered to the front board. Corresponds to all issue points for the first edition according to Scott 65.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and a further three black-and-white plates by A. C. Michael. Collated, complete. This Allan Quartermain novel by H. Rider Haggard involves Quartermain's first marriage to Marie Marais. Their romance is opposed by Marie's father, and her villainous cousin Hernan Pereira, who desires Marie. The novel involves the Sixth Xhosa War of 1835 and Weenen massacre. Real life people such as Piet Retief, Thomas Halstead, and the Zulu chief Dingane appear as characters. Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English author who specialised in adventure fiction set in exotic locations, primarily Africa. He was a pioneer of the 'Lost World' literary genre. In the variant blue cloth binding with a colour plate adhered to the front board. Externally sound, with small marks to the boards and a little fading to the front board. Shelf wear to the joints and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
