Harper & Brothers, 1849. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 volumes, complete as issued. A very good copy of this classic Melville, in unfaded original green cloth stamped in gilt and blind (Volume II has some dampstaining to upper third of text extending from gutter, and spine has some puckering to foot of spine; bookplates expertly removed from front pastedowns; minor wear to cloth, light occasional foxing). BAL 13658, 'T' cloth with blind rule 1/8 inch from top of spine (no priority). PROVENANCE: With ownership inscription of noted poet (and Melville critic) William Matchett on front endpaper of each volume.
