Image measures 14" x 18 1/4". <br> <br> Comes with accompanying text titled "Across the Continent: A Summer's Journey to the Rocky Mountains, the Mormons, and the Pacific States" 8vo, full brown leather, gilt stamped spine (worn at ends), xx + 452 pages + 6 pages of advertising. Springfield, MA: Samuel Bowles & Co., 1866. Second edition with 15 additional pages. Contains ex-libris bookplate, and ownership signature in ink on the title page. Very good(-).<br/> <br/> This map of the western United States was published for Samuel Bowles' "Across the Continent", recording the travels of Bowles and the Hon. Schuyler Colfax to the western territories in 1865. The map extends from the old northwest to California. The routes taken by Colfax and his party are indicated. Finished railways, cities, towns, forts, stage roads, rivers, and topographical features are labeled. An inset in the lower right corner features a Plan of Central California on an Enlarged Scale, depicting the region from Santa Clara to Humboldt. The map is in good condition, with creasing and image loss along original fold lines. Some archival repairs.<br/> <br/>
