About This Item

Small thick 8vo, original cloth with gilt illustration on covers and gilt lettering on spine, richly illustrated (complete with all maps and illustrations), 852 pp. Binding a little worn, some chipping and cracking at spine, some extremity wear, inscription on endpaper, some folding or creasing at map edges, a couple of minor tears normal aging and browning, just a little foxing. Plates and maps are generally in very good condition, and a very respectable copy overall. Complete. Long considered one of the best sources on 19th century New York City history, Valentine Manuals ran 1841 to 1870. They are typically well stocked with maps and many charming illustrations of buildings and places in Old New York. This volume is particularly rich in illustrations, including The Nicolls Map, Metropolitan Police Head Quarters, Theological Seminary, Jackson Ferry, and a View of Harlem from Morisiania. There are also several portraits of prominent New Yorkers of that time. Lawrence  p. 32-34.
