Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, red leather spine labels, page ends washed red, marbled endpapers. Moderate rubbing, minor chipping. Contemporary gift inscription on title pages. Marginal dampstaining to one volume, foxing. <br><br> Charles Rollin was a French historian and educator, known for his revival of classical study, his strong Jansenist beliefs, and educational reform. His most famous work, the Traite des etudes, proposed "a reformed and innovative system of education, including a more frequent and extensive use of the vulgar tongue, and discarded the medieval traditions that had lingered" in French education. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911) <br><br> Provenance: Bookplate of William Maulsby. Maulsby was a noted Maryland politician and Colonel in the Civil War. Maulsby served in U.S. Army in the First Regiment of the Potomac Home Brigade during the Civil War; participated in the battles of Charlestown, Harper's Ferry, Martinsburg, Monocacy, and Gettysburg.
