The present book, which coincides with the paper's third jubilee, has been six year in writing. The Guardian, which became my first employer firty-two years ago today, kindly took me back on to tis staff to ndertake it after thirty years' absence. Its w2hole records have been at my disposa and I have been left entirely free to form and to express my own conclusions. As one would expect of the Guardian, there has been no censorship. Clearly, then, neither the paper not the company has any responsibility for the opinions I have expressed. This essential freedom has been possible because at the beginning we decided that the history should stop short in 1956, a date as much significance in the little world of the Guardian becuse of the death of its editor, A.
