Illustrated with 46 mostly full page, mostly circa 1928 photographs of real locations mentioned in the novel "so that the reader might see the city as it appeared to the eyes of Sam Spade." Photos are captioned on the adjoining pages. Two of the photos are tipped-in. Seven original photographs by Edmund Shea supplement the historic photos. Preface by the publisher and with commentary by modern-day private-eye David Fechheimer. Appendix with notes on the photographs by Glenn Todd. Includes a 4-page fold-out panoramic view of the city from the bay. San Francisco street map endpapers. The types are Bodoni semi-bold and Corvinus medium, decorated with spade ornaments. Printed by letterpress on Byron-Weston Linen Record paper. Handsomely bound in the original gray cloth with black leather spine and foil-stamped black leather "Maltese Falcon" insets on both front and rear covers. The falcon insets are outlined in silver and feature red eyes. Housed in the original matching gray cloth slipcase with black leather silver-stamped spine label. Laid-in is a 2001 letter soliciting funds for the Grabhorn Institute to "preserve this historic facility and adapt it as a living museum..." Oversize Hardcover. 8.25" wide by 10.5" tall.
