Praze (Prague): Ed. Valecka / Ed. Gregr, 1885. Second edition. Hardcover. Good +. Second edition ("Druhé Vydání"). Cloth hardbound with gilt titles and decorations, gilt edges, 269 pp., clean unmarked text, Good+ copy, straining to the inner hinges, discoloration to the pages of the text, light rubbing and wear to the tips and edges of the cloth covers including a bit of loss/fraying to the tips. Text in Czech. Rare book.  Jan Neruda, or Jana Nerudy, was a Czech writer/poet, one of the most prominent representantives of Czech Realism. Neruda's poetry collections were based on contemporary spoken language. He was a member of "the May school", which dominated Czech literature in the 1860s and 1870s, and which opened doors to the currents in European literature. This book is a collection of short sketches, translated into English for the first time in 1957 by the novelist and mystery writer Ellis Peters (pseudonym of Edith Pargeter).
