About This Item

Invitation reads “The Women’s Auxiliary of the N.A.A.C.P. invite you to A Tea. Sunday February 2, 1930—4-6 P.M. Mr. Robert W. Bagnall, Director of Branches. Guest Speaker. Southwest, Y.W.C.A. 1605 Catharine Street.” The stamped and postmarked envelope (Jan 30 1930 PA) is addressed to Mr. A.E. Dutrieuille. Bagnall was an Episcopal priest, a founder of the Detroit NAACP, and the NAACP national Director of Branches who traveled cross-country to raise money for local branches. Dutrieuille was an African American Philadelphia business leader who owned a successful catering business that served black and white communities alike, particularly Philadelphia’s Catholic churches. Toning and staining to both envelope and invitation, both with corner crease; pencil notes on rear of envelope. (see https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/naacp/the-new-negro-movement.html; http://www2.hsp.org/collections/Balch%20manuscript_guide/html/dutrieuille.html)
