About This Item
Very rare and unusual, privately printed copy of "The Mahogany Tree" by William Makepeace Thackeray.Full of interesting features and character. This is one of only 200 copies which were produced in December 1910, apparently for a Christmas party given by Thomas Nast Fairbanks and his wife Elsie. To one of the rear pages is printed "Of this book 200 copies were printed for Thomas Nast Fairbanks by Hal Marchbanks in December 1910."The pages are roughly cut and include a "British Handmade" watermark. An illustration by Edmund Dulac is included towards the front with the following note "This characteristic picture of the author of "The Mahogany Tree" is reproduced from a drawing made by the distinguished illustrator, Mr. Edmund Dulac, for the cover of the menu of the dinner of the Titmarsh Club in London. It is reprinted here by Mr. Dulac's very kind permission."Unusually, this copy also contains a loose hand-made paper sheet with a copy of the poem "A Pedlar" (From the Songs of John Dowland, 1600 A.D.), with "Elsie and Thomas Nast Fairbanks, Christmas 1914" printed at the bottom. The book's front and rear boards are covered with what looks like a mahogany veneer and a parchment spine. All should be clear from the attached photos. All in all, a lovely and unusual item to add to any collection.
