About This Item
1949. GEIGER, Benno. MAGNASCO. Bergamo: Istituto Italiano d'Arti Grafiche, 1949. First, limited edition; this copy is number 507 from a numbered edition of 1500 copies that are signed by the author. Illustrated with 494 plates, of which 29 are color. 196 pp., + plates. Folio, brown morocco spine with gilt title and accents, natural buckram covered boards with title and illustration printed to upper board, brown endpapers. Front pastedown has an old bookseller's catalog description tipped-in. But for a small bit of rubbing at spine, it is a fine copy. Housed in a worn and faded publisher's paper-covered clamshell box that lacks one of the short side panels, shows evidence of earlier tape repairs (now removed), and is splitting at several folds. It is unusual to find the book with the box. A handsome volume about the life and work of the Italian rococo painter Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749), also known as "il Lissandrino.
