About This Item

Worcester: Achille J. St. Onge, 1965. Reprints the text of the earliest form of the Magna Carta, from the original copy lying in Lincoln Cathedral, translation taken, "with slight revision", from 'Facsimiles of National Manuscripts', 1865. Forced upon King John by rebellious Barons led by Robert Lord FitzWalter, the Magna Carta represents the first statement of individual liberty in Western Europe and the beginning of the rule of law there; 1965 saw its 750th anniversary. With frontispiece showing FitzWalter's Arms and King John's, separated by the cross of Stephen Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury. Finely bound miniature book, one of 1250 printed by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen using Eric Gill's Perpetua type on handmade 'Hayle' paper, bound in full smooth beige leather by Proost & Brandt; gilt titling, blind tooling, all edges gilt. Light wear, small stains to covers. Text clean; 70 pages including the colophon.. Limited. Full Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 2¼" by 3". Miniature Book.
