About This Item

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1963. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Sydney, Angus & Robertson, 1963 ('New edition')/ 1918. Quarto, 171 pages with numerous illustrations plus an additional colour-pictorial title page (all from original artwork by the author; the pictorial title page is a replica of that in the first edition). Red cloth slightly rubbed and bumped; a few unobtrusive marks internally; an excellent copy with the colour-pictorial dustwrapper (featuring the main illustration from the pictorial title page) a trifle worn at the extremities. Norman Lindsay has added to the front flyleaf a charming original pencil drawing of Bunyip Bluegum, and a signed inscription - 'A Slice of Pudden' for [Carl Strehlow] from Norman Lindsay' (overall dimensions 120 × 115 mm). The recipient was the son of the linguist Professor Theodor George Henry Strehlow and his second wife Kathleen. Carl was born in early 1973, more than three years after Norman Lindsay's death in November 1969; his name has been inserted in the inscription by his mother.

Ted Strehlow and Norman Lindsay had a close friendship in their later years; not least, Lindsay played an important role in the eventual publication of Strehlow's magnum opus, 'Songs of Central Australia' (1971). We have previously sold a letter written by Lindsay to Strehlow in August 1968; by this time, Angus and Robertson had delayed and deferred its publication for almost a decade, but Lindsay has been onto them, and 'it is only my letter which has jerked them into a fresh consideration [of] it'.

The rear flap of the dustwrapper states that this edition was 'Reproduced by modern offset lithography, this edition recaptures the freshness of Norman Lindsay's original drawings in a way never previously possible'. Muir 4271, noting that 'The illustrations in this new edition were reproduced as well [as] (or even better, Lindsay thought) than in the first edition & it was a handsome book'.
