About This Item

Houghton Mifflin/Riverside Press, 1953. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Poor. Buff, Mary; Buff, Conrad. Collaborative effort by this award-winning team of children's book authors/illustrators, this one is a magical story about Fabian, an Indian boy in Guatemala, who secretly introduces seeds from a new variety of maize, introduced by the white man (gringos), then finds an ancient Mayan jade artifact. In 77 pages, with both pen-and-ink & full-color illustrations throughout, including the endpapers. The book is SiGNED with a personalized, dated inscription to verso of ffep by both authors, along with a gift inscription on same page to the same child. A FIRST EDITION, first printing from 1953, this hardcover 4to has light green cloth-covered boards stamped with a red Mayan image to front & lettered in red to spine. Condition is VG: very clean, binding strong & straight, with cracking to the hinge between pages 44-45. Hinges secure, pages creamy white & unmarked with moderate tanning to edges, color illustrations vivid. Mild rubbing to extremities & slight bumping to corners & spine tips. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $3.00 price intact) is Poor, missing the lower third of the front cover, with larger & small chips, rubbing, & creasing all over; nicely protected in new mylar cover to preserve what's left.
