About This Item

Paris: Calmann Lévy, 1888. Full black leather, gilt titles, beveled boards, all edges red, marbled endpapers. Hinges and spine cracked but still tight, roll to spine, scattered foxing, leaves crisp; still a good copy.. 328 pp. Illus. 8vo. Dessins et aquarelles de Rossi et Myrbach. Gravure de Guillaume Frères. Loti (1850-1923), French naval officer, achieved popularity with his impressionistic, exotic, and romantic tales and is a precursor to modern French fiction between the two world wars. This romantic tale of travel and adventure in Japan may have influenced Puccini's Madam Butterfly.

Synopsis

LOUIS-MARIE-JULIEN VIAUD, "Pierre Loti," was born in Rochefort, of an old French-Protestant family, January 14, 1850. He was connected with the French Navy from 1867 to 1900, and is now a retired officer with full captain's rank. Although of a most energetic character and a veteran of various campaigns - Japan, Tonkin, Senegal, China (1900) - M. Viaud was so timid as a young midshipman that his comrades named him Loti, a small Indian flower which seems ever discreetly to hide itself.
